1st
Devonport Venturer Unit started up in August 2011
We meet at the Scout Den on Tuesday evenings from 7pm
The Venturer Unit is for 14-18 year olds. The activity programme is decided by the Venturers themselves, with a focus on achieving their Venturer Awards. The Award structure is similar to The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Aotearoa NZ / Hillary Award, meaning that many achievements count for both. The ultimate Award to aim for is the King’s Scout Award, which is presented by the Governor General of New Zealand.
Venturers have organised multi-day tramping & camping expeditions to Rangitoto/Motutapu (4 days), Dickey Flat (near Waihi, 3 days) and Lake Waikaremoana (5 days). Some expeditions are for awards and some not, but all are for fun!
Venturers are regularly out and about in the local community as part of our service ethos, and have helped with things like the Fort Victoria open days, Devonport Community Athletics, Devonport Rotary, the Devonport Arts Festival, the Sculpture on Shore Exhibition and the Devonport Food & Wine Festival. We have marshalled at the Rangitoto-Motutapu Dual and have done Amateur Radio link ups to JOTA-JOTI from our Rangitoto Bach. Let us know if you want help!
The opportunity is there for all Venturers to attend specialist National Schools during school holidays. These are residential courses for Aviation, Canoeing /Kayaking, Caving, Mountaineering, Photography and Snowsports. 1DSG Venturers have participated in nearly all of these schools and everyone reports having had a most excellent time.

"The 1st Devonport Venturer Scouts have been supporting the work of the Devonport
Peninsula Trust for many years now. This began with our Kids Athletics Programme,
where the Venturers helped as marshals for their community service. The Venturers
continue to support Kids Athletics to this day.
Since then, the Venturers have also become a key partner to our Bayswater Halloween Trail event – they attend planning meetings, develop the trail questionnaire and provide invaluable marshal support on the day. The Venturers have also helped at the Devonport Family Fun Trail, where they have organised activities at the event end point.
The 1st Devonport Venturers are always reliable and hardworking with plenty of initiative. They are frequently our first ‘port-of-call’ when seeking volunteers at our community events."

"May I take this opportunity on behalf of Devonport Rotary to thank the Venturers for supporting us with the car parking at Fort Takapuna. They all turned up on time and made an important contribution to the management of the car parking. There were times when we were at capacity and without them we would not have achieved what we did. Will you please pass on our thanks to Richard, Michael, Joe and Theo Hoyte. They are all a credit to the Scout movement and ask you to pass on these comments to them. I shall be recommending to the Club's Board of Directors a donation."

"I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the 1st Devonport Venturer Unit very much for your work for Devonport Peninsula Trust. You were always punctual, listened to, and followed, instructions and you worked very well with the children... without the support and help of young people such as yourselves, it would not be possible to put on this programme."

"The
support provided by Richard and his fellow Venturers and Scouts
at Kids Athletics this year made all the difference to Caroyn
and me who organise and co-ordinate the event. So please pass
on our heartfelt thanks to the Venturers and Scouts who helped
out at Kids Athletics 2013 and we look forward to working with
1st Devonport Scout Group again next season."

"I
would like to take this opportunity to thank the Venturer Scouts
Richard deBoyett and Ryan Cundy who assisted Devonport Rotary
over the weekend of 16th and 17th February (at the Devonport Food & Wine Festival) to support Rotary
members working on the main entrance gates . They carried out
their tasks with diligence . They didn't have to be asked to
do things they just got on and did what was asked of them. I
have no hesitation in saying that they are a credit to the Scouting
movement."

"On
behalf of the RIBCA Committee I wish to thank you for your assistance
with the marshalling job at The DUAL last weekend. Your help
was also much appreciated by the Motutapu Restoration Trust
and the team from Total Sport. This forwarded email which was
sent to the marshal leaders by Dave Franks , the course controller
from Total Sport, expresses this appreciation."

"Thank
you for lending me your Venturer Scouts for our Athletics Series
this year. They were very helpful, and showed some good initiative
when needed. I would especially like to thank Peter, who stepped
in when one of our more senior people wasn't able to attend
at the last minute. I had a new "agility" activity
this year. Peter helped me to run the first 2 groups that went
through, then managed the marshalling for that activity for
the entire series. He, in turn briefed one of his colleagues,
and came up with some interesting and effective challenges for
each of the age groups that came through. Each week two of the
boys ran the sausage sizzle, and three of them assisted very
ably with marshalling.
I hope that they found it worthwhile, and that their fundraising
was successful.
Please pass on my thanks to the boys"
