The 1st Devonport Scout Troop

The Devonport Scout troop was first started in 1908 and on 14th October 1909, there was sufficient demand to be be able to start up a second troop. By 1912, there were five Scout Troops at Devonport, including a Troop of Girl Peace Scouts and a Sea Scout Troop !

Scouts are organised into Patrols and run the meetings themselves, which include activities such as pioneering, orienteering, map-reading, First Aid, campcraft, survival, backwoodsmanship, hiking & tramping, , conservation, acting & performance, public service and community endeavours. Of course, the primary activities for scouts like Camps, Jamborees, Hiking Trips etc take place on weekends and during the holidays.

"The aim of the (scouting) association is to develop good citizenship among boys
by forming their character; by training them in habits of observation, obedience,
and self-reliance; by inculcating loyalty and thoughtfulness for others; by teaching
them services useful to the public, and handicrafts useful to themselves;
and by promoting their physical, mental, and spiritual development."
Alistair Millar (former Asst Dominion Secretary)
